A cute miniature with reddish, narrow leaves and a red scape with long bracts and a capitate head with blue flowers. An enigmatic plant discovered in Eastern Dominican Republic growing on tall limestone cliffs by Luis Ariza Julia and Prof. Eugene de J. Marcano. It was identified as Tillandsia capitata by Lyman Smith but a form never before seen. Later it was introduced to cultivation by Rauh as a varietal form of capitata and was given the provisional name of ‘Domingensis’ which was subsequently rejected scientifically, but serves well as a cultivar name to keep this diminutive form separate from the many mainland forms. Easy to grow mounted in bright light. Will form large clusters in time.

Our expert tillandsia grower spotted this clone mixed in with our very first batch of Tillandsia 'Eric Knobloch' and has been growing it, aside, for years. We finally separated it from the named hybrid and gave it it's own name. This clone of brachycaulos x streptophylla is darker and more purple and just slightly smaller in size. An open rosette of light green, curling, silvery dusted leaves form a somewhat bulbous base. An inflorescence that has long, dark lavender blushing bracts and a tight cluster of violet branches rises about 5 inches above the foliage. A handsome, easy to grow and prolific plant.

This is a commercial mix that we at Tropiflora have custom made 50 yards at a time. We use this formula because #1 it works for us and #2 it is economical.

Anyone can mix their own potting media and we encourage you to do so in order to best suit your needs. However, if you wish to use our proven mix, we are more than happy to oblige!

Here is the formulation:

• 30% Canadian Peat
• 30% Green Bark
• 30% Hardwood Chips
• 10% Perlite (though this can vary with availability of materials).

It also includes 3 pounds of minor elements per yard and has a pH level of 6.0 to 6.5.  This mix allows good air access to the root zone, good moisture retention without getting soggy, long pot life, and good substance for holding plants upright.

Note: A one quarter cubic foot bag of soil should fill about half a dozen 6 inch Azalea Pots.

A beautiful and dramatic looking species from a variety of habitats in Mexico and Central America into parts of the Caribbean.  Coastal habitats are preferred and this plant can often be found growing in mangroves or in very exposed locations in other open wooded habitats.  In nature it forms very large clusters and is sometimes inhabited by ants which take advantage of its bulbous base for housing. 

A striking plant that forms a turnip shaped and sized base of broad succulent leaves which hang down in curls.  the curliness of the leaves depends somewhat on the moisture content, becoming more curly as the plant dries out.  The leaves are coated with silvery trichomes and is quite attractive even when not in bloom.  The inflorescence is taller by more than double the base of the plant and the scape has long, curly, leaf-like bracts. Pink branches top the spike and produce purplish-blue flowers at anthesis. The color lasts for a long time and in good light, the inflorescence and some of the upper leaves of the plant can blush reddish. 

A choice plant that should be in every collection.  Easy to grow, mount or hang from a string ‘cradle’, water often and feed well to grow this plant to an impressive size.

This plant and another similar lithophytic plant from Temascal, Veracruz, Mexico both strongly resemble the ‘true’ Tillandsia capitata from Cuba. This plant comes from a drier part of Chiapas, a state in S.W. Mexico, differs in that it is lighter in color, covered with a layer of silvery trichomes. At anthesis, it blushes pink on the upper leaves. The flowers are deep blue and tightly tubular in shape. The true capitata species has as yet not been officially recognized from the mainland, being currently known only from Cuba and Hispaniola.

A beautiful, silvery plant in a leafy 10 inch rosette with a handsome, silver-dusted pink-orange inflorescence and white flowers. Resembles didisticha a little and is sometimes confused with pucaraensis. Our plants came originally from the collection of Dr. Werner Rauh years ago.

The hybrid of (baileyi x ionantha) is both a hybrid by Mulford Foster and also occurs naturally in northern Mexico. Normally a cute miniature with short, 3 inch leaves in an upright, somewhat bottle-shaped rosette. This form is much larger, about double, and came from a wild collection in Tamaulipas, Mexico (SEL79-0005A) a number of years ago. Like the ‘normal form’ this one has an inflorescence that is a short simple scape with purple flowers and a reddish flush that extends to the upper leaves. This is just a more robust form.

This is a showy 6 to 8 inch species from Bolivia and Argentina, and is thought to possibly be a natural hybrid of ixioides and recurvifolia. It has stiff silvery leaves in a an upright rosette, with a fairly long scape, bearing pink bracts and light yellow flowers. The fragrance is faint, at best, but is described as 'spicy'. A nice plant that flowers freely and makes large clusters in a few seasons. Easy to grow, bright and on the dry side.

Mark Dimmit’s hybrid of the same grex as ‘Houston’, a (stricta x recurvifolia) cross. Larger than either parent, it has many silvery, semi-soft leaves in a full 8 inch rosette. The large semi-pendant inflorescence has bright rose-red bracts. A very showy plant!
