A rare variegated form of the species. The caudex is variegated with yellow. 

Not to be confused with Adenium, a completely different genus. Actually succulent forms of the Passifloraceae or Passion Flower family, many Adenias form thick stems which endear them to caudiciform plant lovers. However, when young they little resemble the future finished product. Typical young venenata are tall and resemble an upside-down elongated carrot. The leaves are accompanied by thread-like tendrils which vine around any available object. The caudex thickens with age and can reach 6 feet in very old plants and the vine can go on for 30 feet or more, but can be trimmed to keep it manageable. Leaves are stellate and the flowers are tiny, green and dioecious. Native to central and eastern Africa.

Outstanding plants now considered a form of obesum. Thicker and squatter than most other forms, these beauties form an extra thick caudex with multiple fat branches. The flowers are pink with stripes in the throat.

An Aechmea eurycorymbus hybrid from Bullis Bromeliads. Large growing with stiff green leaves. The inflorescence has clustered branches of yellow with red bracts and is very colorful. The inflorescence is long lasting and this is a good landscape plant. 

A small growing Aechema recurvata hybrid by Lisa Vinzant. Olive green with dark leaf tips that turn blue with age. Produces a short inflorescence of pink. Matures at 10 inches tall. Grows best in bright filtered light.

A cultivar of (Aechmea chantinii x ramosa). The plant is an upright funnel form rosette with fairly stiff, 2 to 3 inch wide leaves nearly 24 inches long, with fairly large spines and reddish tips. The color is medium green with pale green variegation and light gray banding as with the chantinii parent. The inflorescence is well-branched and erect, with a rose-red scape and scape bracts and yellow flowers with rose-tinted yellow ovaries. Appears to be very long lasting in bloom.

This plant was found in a Panamanian landscape by Bob Alonzo who obtained an offset, mistaking it for a variegated Portea petropolitana in its non-blooming state. He gave the plant to us upon his return. Since blooming, we feel the plant is the above hybrid and Harry Luther of the BIC concurs. Since there is no record of this cross in a variegated state in cultivation, we have decided to register it and name it in honor of Bob Alonzo who made the find.

A cultivar of (calyculata x recurvata) is a tough and handsome small grower that keeps a compact shape in varying light conditions. The recurvata parent lends an upright, compact, vase-like shape, and the calyculata parent adds the bright yellow flowering inflorescence. Nice for landscape around boulders.

A new hybrid by Bryan Windham. It's a cross between Aechmea chantinii 'Black' x Aechmea brassicoides. The center of the plant is an upright rosette of burgundy chocolate, slightly overlapping leaves that are heavily scurfed. At anthesis the red bracted inflorescence comes out the center of the plant. A truly unique and bizarre looking plant. 

NO HOLDING/FIRST TIME RELEASE!

Somewhat squat plastic pots, three quarters as tall as wide, with drainage holes. This is the most common style of pot that we use here at Tropiflora and are pretty much the “industry standard” for most production of tropical plants and succulents. 

We only stock in forest green.   We do not carry other colors. 

This is a commercial mix that we at Tropiflora have custom made 50 yards at a time. We use this formula because #1 it works for us and #2 it is economical.

Anyone can mix their own potting media and we encourage you to do so in order to best suit your needs. However, if you wish to use our proven mix, we are more than happy to oblige!

Here is the formulation:

• 30% Canadian Peat
• 30% Green Bark
• 30% Hardwood Chips
• 10% Perlite (though this can vary with availability of materials).

It also includes 3 pounds of minor elements per yard and has a pH level of 6.0 to 6.5.  This mix allows good air access to the root zone, good moisture retention without getting soggy, long pot life, and good substance for holding plants upright.

Note: A one quarter cubic foot bag of soil should fill about half a dozen 6 inch Azalea Pots.

Our virgin cork slabs are flat and vary in size from about 6 inches to over 12 inches wide and 12 to 30 inches long. Thickness varies from about a half inch to two inches with the majority being in between those numbers.

To get an idea of size to weight, you can figure roughly a square foot per pound, rarely under that, usually over. This material is widely touted to be the best and most durable substrate for mounting epiphytic plants; resisting rot and pests and lasting for many years under greenhouse conditions. The upper surface is rough and craggy and the underside, harder and fairly smooth. Great for use in terrariums or cages as it is non-toxic, and useful as a decorative background to display jewelry or other objects.

This product is harvested sustainably in Portugal from Quercus suber, the cork oak, and it’s main use is for bottle stoppers and shoe soles. This is a completely natural product. Easily broken into any size needed and can be ‘drilled’ with an awl or ice pick.

Tropiflora's Air Plant Food Soluble 20-10-20

This is a good quality, versatile formula for epiphytic plants. This fertilizer does not use urea as a nitrogen source, as it is not usable by epiphytic plants. Water soluble, it can be used in daily irrigation or applied at intervals. Will not burn foliage at recommended rates and does not stain foliage. This is the fertilizer we use here at Tropiflora for our bromeliads, orchids and all epiphytic plants.

Application Rates: Constant Feed: A rate of 50 to 150 ppm of nitrogen is recommended. For bi-weekly applications: Use at the rate of 1½ to 2 tsp per gallon of water. Monthly: 1 to 1½ to tbs/gal.

Tropiflora Succulent Mix – While we call this our ‘succulent mix’ we use this for many more things around the nursery.  Succulents thrive in it under our rather wet, humid conditions and so do many plants such as terrestrial bromeliads, tuberous Arums, and others. It is a good quality mix that we have custom made for us in 50 yard loads.

The formula is:

• 20% Canadian Peat
• 45% small Fir Bark
• 35% coarse Perlite (Sponge Rock)

It has a pH of 6.0.
