A really nice hybrid of (hammeri x concolor ‘Cuicatlan’) by Bill Timm. What a neat combination, a tall, stiff leaved, upright plant crossed with a stiff leaved open rosette type with a beautiful inflorescence. It worked! This is a jewel with stiff, upright, very narrow foliage, and a showy, branched inflorescence that is upright, taller than the foliage and pink and green to reddish. Interestingly enough, both species occur in the same area of Mexico! 

A Don Beadle hybrid of ‘Baton Rouge’ x (R.L. Frasier x ‘Colores’). A tall, flaring rosette with pinkish-red veneer over white spotted, light green leaves. Some red banding is scattered along the leaf and the lower portions of the leaf undersides have silver banding. Colorful and attractive.

Drimiopsis maculata is an evergreen geophyte found on forest floors and shaded stream banks in eastern southern Africa. Leaves are deeply lobed on slender banded petioles, with dark green spots and wavy margins. Flowers are in a small compact inflorescence. The buds are white and the flowers grey green. This plant flowers between September and April. Grow the bulbs in a well drained, but organic rich medium and keep it moist during the summer growing season. It does fine with year-round watering. The species is winter deciduous and can take light frost, but not a hard freeze. Plant in light shade to part sun. Freckles on leaves will be more colorful in summer.

A colorful hybrid of (capitata ‘Red’ x concolor ‘Cuicatlan’) by Bill Timm. Bill has been a prolific hybridizer of Tillandsias, creating quite a few unique crosses. This one is a medium sized plant about 12 inches tall when in bloom, with stiff glabrous green leaves in an open rosette shape. The inflorescence is about 6 inches tall with very long, stiff, scape bracts and a cluster of erect yellowish branches. The scape bracts and upper whorl or two of leaves blush deep reddish at anthesis. A colorful plant that will grow easily and add color to your collection. 

A plant of some mystery. Central American forms of concolor are still offered as acostae, as are some forms of fasciculata. In fact, I am not certain that anyone really knows what exactly Tillandsia acostae is. This species is now considered to be rhomboidea, though we also have that species and this one is different in some ways.

Our plants came from Costa Rica many years ago. At the time we showed the plants to Prof. Dr. Werner Rauh who gave us the name. Over the years we have never seen another ‘real’ acostae, and I guess we never will as it is now not recognized. It is a compact, stiff leaved plant with a dark orange, inflorescence with four or more branches that are almost oval in cross section. Rather slow growing but worth the wait!

A beautiful hybrid of (tricolor x fasciculata) that we got many years ago from famous bromeliad breeder and promoter; Ervin Wurthman. A robust plant to about 24 inches tall, with narrow, gracefully arching reddish, somewhat silver dusted leaves in an upright rosette. The inflorescence is a tall red and yellow scape that is usually well branched. Ervin told us that he had gotten this plant long ago as a natural hybrid from Mexico. Years later, even after Ervin had passed away in 2004, we decided to name this plant after him. Easily adaptable to pot culture.

A John Arden hybrid of (jalisco-monticola x capitata). A tough and showy plant with leathery reddish leaves in a symmetrical, very leafy rosette. The inflorescence is a tight cluster of many dark orange branches in a capitate head with long scape bracts exceeding the branches. Very long lasting in color. A heavy plant, tough and sturdy, easy to grow. Grows well mounted or potted in a fast draining mix with good aeration. 

A colorful small plant with green leaves, washed with red and a sort of banded pattern. The cup flushes vivid red-purple in bloom. A nice windowsill-sized plant. The cross is  by Gary Hendrix Neoregelia princeps x ‘Fireball’ x ‘Peggy Pollard’.

A stunning species with an open rosette of wide green, black spined leaves which grows to well over 30 inches. The inflorescence is a panicle of fiery-red berries and red flowers which rises well above the foliage. A rarity that is definitely a must for your collection.

This Grace Goode miniature is a hybrid of (lilliputiana x ‘Strawberry Cup’). Barely 4 inches tall, it is an upright, ampoule shaped plant on short stolons. The leaves are stiff, golden yellowish-green with slight red tips, light red spotting and red leaf bases.

This Chester Skotak hybrid (cross not yet reported) is a Neo. ‘Hannibal Lecter’- like plant in size, shape and pattern. The leaves start out green but with age and good light develop a yellowish tinge. The leaves are heavily marked with red banding in the typical Tiger pattern and the leaf edges have moderate spines. Beautiful, glossy foliage, a winner!

This stunner has been one of the most in-demand of RL Frasier’s hot concentrica hybrids. A cultivar of [(carolinae x concentrica) x ('King of Kings' x concentrica)] x johannis, it was named and registered several years ago, but few were ever released. A super plant in every way, wide leaved, huge growing, colorful, and with a great shape. It takes on a deep fuchsia-purple flush in bright light with some whitish and deep purple blotching. The variegation is a broad creamy-white stripe up the center of each leaf.
