This is a plant with a somewhat mysterious origin. We obtained this plant some years ago as an offset from a grower in California who said that this was a bigeneric hybrid between a Hechtia and a Dyckia. We grew it for some years before it finally flowered and could see no trace of Dyckia in the plant and so we reported this back to the grower. He said that he had never bloomed it yet and that he guessed that the cross didn’t take! Oh well, so this is a Hechtia, probably a hybrid but maybe a species that we can’t identify, but it’s a nice plant. Forming a spiny rosette to about 20 inches across with tapering, succulent leaves that blush bright red in full sun. The inflorescence is typical of Hechtia, a tall scape with many branches and tiny white flowers.
