A unique hybrid of (Deut. lorentziana green clone x Ortho. estevesii (type)). Back in 1996 when Ray Lemieux was new to Tropiflora, he had not yet learned about bromeliad sub families, and did not know that supposedly crosses could not be made across these barriers. He wanted to take some of the orange color from Orthophytum inflorescence and put it in the all green Deuterocohnia while preserving the small size. The result was ‘Surprise‘ which is, as far as we know, the first of its kind bigeneric across sub families. A small grower with stiff leaves in a 4 to 5 inch or smaller rosette. The inflorescence is a short scape with rust colored bracts and Kelly green flowers. Forms mounds in a fairly short time.
