One of the superlative species in this variable genus. A trip to the Chapada Diamantina of Bahia, Brazil in late 2002 exposed us to more different clones of this species than we ever knew existed. A silvery-gray plant with a rosette shape of many narrow, stiff, spiny leaves produces a bright center flush of (usually) red, with white flowers. Here is where we found great variability. We saw plants with red centers, red and yellow, orange, pink and solid yellow.
