As a species, baccifera , often called 'mistletoe cactus' because of its white berries, ranges from Florida to Brazil, including the Caribbean and jumps over to Africa and beyond, the only cactus to do so. Various subspecies may have different characteristics and different distributions and may one day be divided into separate species. The subspecies mauritiana is found in tropical Africa, Madagascar, the Comoros Islands, Seychelles and up to Sri Lanka. It has spaghetti-like stems are very long, up to six feet or more with very long intervals between branches. In the cultivar 'Ferrari' the tips of the stems become reddish, yellowish or dark brown. A very handsome and different form.
