This plant is the first of several bromeliads to be recognized as having a carnivorous habit. Insects visiting this species become trapped and drown in the water of the tank, which is said to contain a mild digestive enzyme. The plants are upright, somewhat tubular with pale green leaves, almost chartreuse or yellowish, coated with a waxy ‘bloom’ or powder. An epiphyte found widely from southern Florida to Brazil. This species is almost never available in spite of a more or less constant demand by carnivorous plant collectors. Not the easiest plant to grow either, demanding good water and good air circulation. Can be grown potted or mounted and has been reported by some growers to prefer growing on a ‘live host’.
