Clearly this plant is a natural hybrid of Tillandsia bulbosa x balbisiana (or balbisiana x bulbosa) as it was originally wild collected from a forested area of Abaco Island in the Bahamas where these two species occur, growing together and the only other bromeliad found nearby is Tillandsia utriculata. The plant demonstrates characteristics of both putative parents; bulbous shape with semi-terete leaves, mostly glabrous with slight scurffing and a tall, erect inflorescence bearing glossy pink to red branches and bluish-purple flowers. The plant is larger than the bulbosa parent.
