Formerly Orthophytum heleniceae, reassigned by Louzada and Wanderley.  This species is a narrow endemic from the vicinity of Cachoeira da Garapa in Andarai, Bahia, Brazil where it lives on nearly vertical rocks growing in cracks and crevices.  The environment is moist, near waterfalls, full sun and situated at nearly 4000 feet of altitude.  A fairly large growing species with many leaves forming a flattened rosette at anthesis to over 24 inches across.  The leaves are narrow, green with small, serrate spines on the margins.  At anthesis the leaves blush red but maintain light green bases, forming a broad light green ring around the inflorescence, surrounded by red.  A very showy plant when in bloom.

Originally collected by Oscar and Helenice Ribeiro, in who’s honor the plant is named.  This clone originated in the collection of Elton Leme, sourced from Oscar Ribeiro and came to us from the collection of the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens with their accession number of SEL2003-0253.
