Native to the coastal parts of Brazil near Rio where it can be seen in large colonies on rocky cliffs and insulbergs, right down to the water line in the Atlantic. The large inflorescences are visible for long distances on the cliffs, with a pinkish-orange rachis, green and pink-orange bracts and pale, light yellow branches with very large white flowers. In cultivation it is a green leaved plant in a large rosette, with a dusting of powder on the leaves. A dark tint can color the leaves, especially towards the tips, in strong light.
