This is a species of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest and it inhabits many different ecotypes within its range, from epiphytic is mesic forests to dwelling in light sand on shaded coastal dunes. Mainly a green leaved plant though some forms tend to have black bases. The inflorescence again is variable and can range from solid red to tricolor with green, yellow and red. The inflorescence is flattened with a serrate outline and can be short, just a few inches, to very elongated reaching well over a foot in length. This species has been widely used in hybridization because of its many good characteristics. The straight species though is hard to beat!
