Formerly Vriesea hitchcockiana, now classified as Tillandsia,  hitchcockiana has narrow, stiff leaves in a graceful rosette.  The inflorescence is pink, branched and very tall, with lavender flowers.  Native from Ecuador to Peru, it is a saxicole or epiphyte in nature.  It bears certain similarity to Vr. cereicola but lacks the stoloniferous habit of that species.

Tillandsia hitchcockiana and Vriesea cereicola are two species of gray leaved Vrieseas that are superficially similar. Both have stiff leaves and grow in a more or less tight, upright rosette. Their inflorescences, an overall pink, can be simple or branched. Some basic differences are this; hitchcockiana is a dark brownish gray and does not have stolons, cereicola is silver and is quite stoloniferous. Both are epiphytic or saxicolous, cereicola is fond of growing on cacti, hence the name.

An interesting sport of the species, this produces a white inflorescence rather than the usual pink. Only a few available.

An interesting novelty that occurred in the collection of Bert Foster about 25 years ago and has persisted ever since. An otherwise normal ionantha but with even breaks in the trichomes, forming a banded pattern. Very decorative miniature measuring approximately 2 inches tall.

*MINIATURE TILLANDSIA*

Also known as ‘Huamelula‘, is among the largest and loveliest of the various ionantha forms. It occurs naturally on rocky cliffs above a deep seaside canyon in Oaxaca, Mexico. This form grows up to six inches across in a spreading rosette, and colors a magnificent overall red when in bloom. Large, lovely and easy to grow!

A cross of two plants of the southern cone of South America. Tillandsia ixioides which has few, very stiff leaves and no appreciable stem and bergeri which has a long stem and many short, stiff leaves. The result is a plant with many stiff leaves that recurve downwards in a rosette to about 4 inches in diameter. The inflorescence favors bergeri, with pale blue, twisted petals but can be variable in color (see photos).

A small plant with grayish silver leaves in an upright rosette. It is clustering and has a short scape with bright pink bracts and yellowish flowers.

There seem to be two forms of Tillandsia jaliscomonticola from Mexico's desert southwest, one that produces a simple, un-branched, but large spike and one that produces an inflorescence with multiple branches. The branched form produces from three to six or more branches that are thickly inflated, and form an upright cluster at the top of the rachis. Colors are stunning, bright red below and bright yellow above, and lasting for months, make this a top choice of showy Tillandsia species. The foliage is narrow and channeled, in an open, arching rosette. A spectacular plant that is easy to cultivate, warm and breezy.

The shells have fishing line secured to the top. You can hang it from the fishing line or upside down with the plant facing upwards in a bright filtered light area. Growing in a widow works wonders. 

When watering, you can get the entire plant and shell wet but make sure excess water is able to escape.

We will pack the shipment as carefully as we can, but we can not guarantee that the Alfonso shells will not break during shipment due to their delicate shell. Please understand this risk when purchasing the Alfonso shell. Muffin Snail and Tonna Shell would be a more secure option.

A smallish species of Tillandsia that grows on a long stem.  The narrow, stiff leaves are 2 to 3 inches long spaced along the stem and taper to a point.  The overall color is dark purplish with a silvery tint.  The inflorescence is a 2 inch scape with bright pink bracts and flaring blue flowers.  Clumps are easily formed and once a clump forms, the plants can be suspended from a string for cultivation. 

Native to Rio Grande do Sul in Southern Brazil, it has a strong resemblance to T. aeranthos though it must be significantly different enough to deserve species status.  Our plants came originally from the collection of Elton Leme.
