It’s hard to improve on Tillandsia brachycaulos, a pretty, easy to grow, green plant that blushes bright red when in bloom. But, growers are always looking for something better or at least different, and this clone has been judged to be ‘brighter red’ with noticeably narrower leaves. Whether it is better than the original or typical clone is a matter of conjecture and more to the point, in the eye of the beholder, but anyway it is a nice little show plant worthy of space in your collection.

A fairly newly resurrected species related to compressa and fasciculata, native to the State of Veracruz in Mexico. The type locality is near the town of Hidalgotitlán in the seasonally dry, broad leaf forests of the eastern Isthmus of Tehuantepec. A medium sized plant to about 20 inches tall with narrow, tapering leaves in an upright vase shape. The inflorescence is stunning, uprightly branched and bright yellow. An outstanding plant without any special cultural requirements other than typical for Tillandsias.

One of the most desirable and sought Tillandsia species ever. This is the rare clone with the deep-red inflorescence, from the hinterlands of the Darien in Panama. A rather small plant, growing to about six inches across in a somewhat bulbous, greenish-gray open rosette. The inflorescence is a short inflated, disproportionately large, arrowhead-shaped scape of deep red. We collected our original stock of these beauties some years ago on one of our most adventurous trips ever, and have established a nice sized colony. Easily forms clumps.

Grow bright, out of direct sun, keep warm and feed often.

A handsome form of this variable species from Mexico has grayish-green leaves in a 12 to 18 inch upright rosette. The inflorescence is a torch-like head of long yellow bracts that is long lasting and colorful. A lithophyte in nature, it can be grown mounted or potted in a well-draining mix.

This is a form of this lithophytic species from Venezuela that grows to nearly 10 inches tall, or at least generally larger than most other clones. Other than that it is typical, needle like ¾ inch long leaves on a long stem, silvery green, tinting red in good light and blushing deep red at the crown near anthesis. Flaring, tubular flowers are bright red.

This larger growing species is a rock dwelling saxicole in its native Jalisco, Mexico habitat. A wide spreading rosette of 3/4 inch wide, leathery leaves blushes bright red in strong light. At anthesis the capitate head of red bracts rises well above the foliage, is bright red with blue flowers. A very showy plant and prized by collectors. Can be grown mounted or potted in a well-draining media.
