A large growing terrestrial species that is found from Mexico to Colombia and Ecuador. A giant grower in nature, to over six feet tall, the variety quadricolor has been cultivated as a pot plant for years and is kept much smaller. Still though with a large pot and good fertilization the plants can reach about 4 feet across. The spectacularly variegated form has a broad yellowish white stripe up the center of the leaves. The leaves bear large but well spaced spines on the margins and the leaves are broad and glossy. This variegated form was originally brought into cultivation by Mulford Foster from a Mexican garden, but the exact origins are unknown. Easy to grow in normal bromeliad soil and an 8 inch pot or larger for best results.
