A species widespread in southern South America, is a common plant and one of the most fragrant and easy to cultivate species. Grows in tangled clusters with silvery, eight to twelve-inch leaves. The inflorescence has a cluster of short branches and bears many purple, highly fragrant flowers. Grow mounted in a breezy spot.

A hybrid of (mallemontii x duratii) by M. Patterson in Australia, it’s a pretty good combination of the two parents. Tillandsia duratii is a robust plant with a long stem and curling leaves, rootless in the adult form and producing a long, branched inflorescence with fragrant purple flowers. Tillandsia mallemontii is a plant with fine leaves, forming a tangled ball with many plants. The slender inflorescence is un-branched and produces a large, fragrant, purple flower. 

The hybrid ‘Wonga’ looks more like a skinny duratii with many curly leaves and a long, branching inflorescence. The stunning thing though is that the flowers of both parents are very fragrant and those of ‘Wonga’ are not!

A tiny fan shaped plant that forms massive clusters. Each individual plant grows to about three inches tall and wide. It is found mainly as a twig epiphyte from Paraguay to Argentina and Bolivia. Our plants are from material that we collected near Mataral, Santa Cruz, Bolivia in 1994. It can often be seen growing in ball-like clusters on power lines. The flowers are tiny but pretty, purple colored, flaring and mildly fragrant. Culture with bright light and ample air circulation. Does great just hanging on a wire or string. Do not allow clumping plants to remain wet for long after watering.

A small species with twisted foliage and fragrant light blue flowers. Native of Bolivia and Argentina where it grows in small clusters in the arid scrublands. The leaves are silvery, terete and somewhat kinked. Its inflorescence is like that of a streptocarpa, with light blue fragrant flowers. Grow bright and airy for best results.
