A species native from central Mexico to Colombia in moist forests. A terrestrial species with lanceolate leaves bearing stout spines along the petiole. The inflorescence is simple, erect with scape bracts at a 90 degree angle to the rachis. Flowers are yellow. The inflorescence on our plant is brownish in color but in the species in general can range from bright red to yellow. Our plant was originally from the Marie Selby Gardens and came to us as a ‘weed’ in a pot of another species. Later, after blooming, Harry Luther identified the plant as Pit. atrorubens from Costa Rica.
