A medium sized Bromelia with stiff leaves in an arching rosette shape to about 30 inches across. The leaves are channeled and heavily armed with hooked marginal spines. In full sun the plant can be reddish or bronzy and at anthesis the center blushes red. The inflorescence is a short shape with a globose head of branches, very long, leaf-like bracts and large, tubular-flaring purple flowers. The head is coated with a layer of gold colored 'fur'. Native to the caatinga and cerado life zones of north-central Brazil.
