A species similar to Rhipsalis paradoxa and was even considered a dwarf form of that species for some time. Native to semi arid scrub forest of the restinga in northeastern Rio de Janeiro state of Brazil where it grows both as an epiphyte and lithophyte in sunny locations. The stems are slender with the familiar ‘chain link’ look of paradoxa but not as pronounced. Flowers and subsequent fruits are red.
