Cryptanthus species from the Atlantic rainforest in the State of Bahia in Brazil.  Named for the Municipio Ubaira, found about 3 km east of Ubaira on the road to Mutuipe in open woodland on sloping hills in diffuse light growing in leaf mold on sandy soil.  The plant is rhizomatous, more or less prostrate, with leaves that are green or purplish green above, silvery green below.  A small-sized plant with an overall full-round shape having wide leaves and attaining a diameter of 8 to 10-inches  The flowers are white, only one opening at a time, producing offsets only after flowering, whereupon the mother plant quickly withers and dies.

***This species is prone to melting and rotting quickly in a typical potting mix after flowering.  So for best results, we recommend growing this particular species in a dirty Turface® mix, equal parts peat based potting mix and Turface® All Sport.  Fill the bottom of your pot with a shallow layer of potting mix, this prevents the Turface® mix from running out the bottom of your pot, and the remainder with the dirty Turface® mix.
