A giant grower from hybridizer David Fell in Hawaii. This plant is registered as an xVriecantarea but David lists it’s parents as (‘Volcano’s Mist’ x ‘Volcano’s Mist’). ‘Volcano’s Mist’ is an Alcantarea. So, we are confused, where does the Vriesea come in? We are keeping the xVrecantarea name though as that is how the plant was registered with the BSI Cultivar Registrar.
It looks like a nice clone of Alcantarea imperialis with a leafy rosette of broad leaves, red with a veneer of silver in older plants. Highly decorative, it is popular with landscapers.

This stunning large cross of Dyckia platyphylla x ‘Carlsbad‘ has many spiny arching leaves in a rosette to well over 18 inches. One of the most colorful of Dyckia hybrids, it has reddish/brown leaves in full sun or a deep burgundy color in lower light.
These are so healthy with fabulous color!!
Good size, healthy, plant already throwing off baby dyckia’s. Plants from Tropiflora are always in good shape.

A cultivar of Goudaea ospinae v. gruberi, a beautiful Colombian species, with (in our opinion) an unfortunate name choice. A beauty with light green colored leaves that have reduced burgundy colored markings that resemble wet ink that has been smeared. Grows and offsets the same as other ospinae v. gruberi cultivars and has the same inflorescence.

This Ed Edmiston hybrid is a cultivar of ‘Jet Age’ x lacerdae ‘Menescal’ having 10+ lanceolate leaves forming a medium plant to 12″ in diameter with a full round, open, flat rosette. The plants are larger than Cryptanthus lacerdae ‘Menescal,’ but lacks the long stolons. The light chocolate background leaf color is marked with silvery grey central and marginal longitudinal stripes. The bottom of the leaf is covered in a medium dense lineated white scurf.

This is a stunning species that was new to science in 1992. Since then it has entered cultivation and has been quite widely cultivated. As with any new plant, eventually one or more clones are selected to be grown on and the rest seem to fade into oblivion. There are already a few clones that have been given cultivar names and more that may.
This one we simply call the ‘best clone’ here at the nursery, not just because of its nice bloom, but because of the foliage. This form is light green with rosy red leaf tips. The red coloration extends inward with maturity and especially in fall when the temperatures begin to moderate. The inflorescence of this form is nice too; a panicle of fiery-red berries and red flowers which rises well above the foliage. A must for your collection and great in landscapes.

Very friendly and helpful
The plant purchased is gorgeous, prettier than their picture. I visited Tropiflora and picked it out but have often purchased from them online and have had the plants shipped. In every case, the plants have been as described, very healthy, and very well packaged.
Tropiflora’s bromeliads are outstanding and the personnel are knowledgeable and very helpful.

A nice and different clone collected by Harry Luther on a 1987 Selby expedition to Panama with Libby Besse, Joe Halton and John Kress. The plant was found in Bocas del Toro in the vicinity of Chiriqui Grande at about sea level (SEL87-0233A). A stiff leaved plant, more open in shape than some other forms, with silver banding on the leaf undersides and heavy speckling on the upper sides when grown bright. The inflorescence is short, semi-erect with crimson bracts and yellow sepals and petals. Stoloniferous in habit, it grows to about 15 inches tall. A piece of bromeliad history!
