A lovely hybrid made by Grant Groves
Back in the last century, specifically from the 1980s through about 1993, I lived and breathed bromeliads.
I worked at a high class tropical plant shop in Gatlinburg Tennessee, where I was introduced to the diversity of the bromeliaceae.
I met Mr Groves at Bert Fosters' nursery, and I feel we became friends.
Magali is one of heaven knows how many superior Neoregelia hybrids that Grant made. And not just Neos.
I like to think of Magali as a retro looking Neoregelia. Back when I worked at Blooms of Gatlinburg, the basic 4 bromeliads we sold were Ae. fasciata, Vr. splendens, Guz. lingulata, and Ne. carolinae. Or hybrids made from them.
Neoregelia 'Magali' makes a great house plant. Get one for yourself now. Here's Grant in a tree, much like Mulford Foster before him

A giant grower from hybridizer David Fell in Hawaii. This plant is registered as an xVriecantarea but David lists it’s parents as (‘Volcano’s Mist’ x ‘Volcano’s Mist’).‘Volcano’s Mist’ is an Alcantarea. So, we are confused, where does the Vriesea come in? We are keeping the xVrecantarea name though as that is how the plant was registered with the BSI Cultivar Registrar.
It looks like a nice clone of Alcantarea imperialis with a leafy rosette of broad leaves, red with a veneer of silver in older plants. Highly decorative, it is popular with landscapers.
I can’t describe how beautiful it is. It is so big.

This outstanding Skotak hybrid is a cultivar of [(carolinae x concentrica) x ‘Royal Burgundy’] x ‘Royal Burgundy’. A red hot beauty with a reddish-burgundy overall color and darker medio-picta variegation. The variegation blushes a vivid, even brilliant red, giving the plant a glowing look. This stunning large cross of Dyckia platyphylla x ‘Carlsbad‘ has many spiny arching leaves in a rosette to well over 18 inches. One of the most colorful of Dyckia hybrids, it has reddish/brown leaves in full sun or a deep burgundy color in lower light.
Good size, healthy, plant already throwing off baby dyckia’s. Plants from Tropiflora are always in good shape.

A fantastic 2022 hybrid from Jim Pearce is a cross of Pitcairnia (Pepinia) leopoldii x burle-marxii. Grows to 20 inches across and 20 inches tall. The inflorescence is bright red orange that grows out of the center of the plant.
Received quickly. Broms I ordered are good quality, and received in perfect shape.

It’s early days. I soak all plants in distilled water for 24 hours to hydrate them rain water whe ever it’s available. Then I plant in moist media and wait till they get going.

Wilted bromeliad
My Pitciarnia obsession arrive with all the leaves curled in. I gave it a good watering and that didn’t help. I called Tropiflora and the woman told me to plant it in soil vs the orchid bark I planted it in. I did that and no change. See photo. I hope to get a new plant or a refund/ credit.

First released at the 2016 WBC in Houston, Texas. Green leaves with white margins. The tops of the leaves are covered with tiny red speckles and the undersides of the leaves are banded in red. If you like a bright white miniature Neoregelia, this is the one for you. Looks especially nice in a hanging pot.
