One of the most unusual and outstanding species of the genus Hippeastrum. A large growing epiphyte with beautiful large flowers that resemble a butterfly in shape. The color is creamy white with bright green at the center and bearing burgundy flares and stripes, very colorful! Reportedly amongst the fastest growing species and having the largest bulbs. In nature it is a rainforest epiphyte that was thought to be extinct in nature but now is known from a small area of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, high in primary forest. Less than fifty wild plants are known to exist.
Our plants came from the collection of the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens with the accession number of SEL 2006-0021 and is reportedly from adjacent Santa Catarina state. Plant this species with at least a third or even half of the bulb above the ground level. Flowering is in winter or spring. This species does not have a dormant period.
