A fairly large and handsome species with light green arching leaves in a rosette to about 30 inches across. The leaves are somewhat channeled and the leaf margins have moderate spines. The inflorescence is stellate with showy carmine-red bracts up to 4 inches or so in length nested in the center of the rosette. Once common in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro State where it grows on the ground in shady restinga habitat, but is now quite rare in the wild. Easy to cultivate in bright shade.,
