This is an obscure species that we have been growing for quite a few years. Our days of collecting in Brazil are far behind us now, but we still have a selection of jewels that we are working and propagating and will be releasing over the years to come. This plant; Hohenbergia lanata is one such plant. Our plant came from a collection made in the Chapada Diamantina region of Bahia in Brazil where it grows mainly on rock outcrops in the caatinga habitat. A upright grower with bronzy leaves in a slightly bulbous based upright vase shaped rosette. Lower leaves are flaring in typical open rosette shape and can reach a spread of about 36 inches. The leaves have a faint striped pattern due to the arrangement of their trichomes into lineations. Heavy, black marginal spines are quite decorative. The inflorescence is a tall, few branched panicle of pink, with strobilate clusters of yellow flowers hidden in a coating of white, cottony trichomes. Useful in landscape where in full sun, the foliage takes on a reddish appearance.
