An albomarginated sport of the species; Aechmea jungurudoensis that occurred in a batch of seedlings grown by Chester Skotak.
Chester also discovered this remarkable species in the Darien of Panama; Serrania de Jungurudo on the slopes of Mt. Garagara at 600 meters of altitude back in June of 2003 and ultimately described by Harry Luther. This new species is somewhat enigmatic with affinities to both Ae. penduliflora and Ae. spectabilis but differs in having pedicellate flowers with spreading corollas, amongst other unique attributes. A fairly large grower to 30 inches tall and 36 inches across with leaves about 2 inches wide. The leaves are light green with white margins that turn pink in good light and at maturity.
The inflorescence is a tall scape with a cluster of branches bearing white, pedicellate flowers with white, flaring petals. The scape bracts are showy, bright pink. A species of cool, moist montane forests that seems to thrive best with pure water and needs to be protected from both cold temps and extreme heat. Would not be a good choice for a novice grower.
