Having little in common with the other species, strobilacea, it differs in having upright, very thin, deeply channeled leaves, heavily armed with black spines and a short inflorescence nested within the foliage with large, light blue flowers.
An altogether curious and interesting species. Forms large clusters if left undivided and makes an interesting hanging basket subject.
