This species is known only from the type locality near Buenos Aires in the state of Chiapas, Mexico. An epiphyte in pine-oak forests at 5,800 feet in altitude, it seems to thrive at sea level in Florida. The species resembles Til. tricolor, but has more and broader, light green leaves.
The inflorescence has cylindrical branches arranged polystichously, yellow-green with red tips, and is much more heavily branched than tricolor. Flowers are violet, tubular shaped with the petals flaring slightly at the tips. It produces offsets on stolons. The etymology of the name suggests “cock’s comb” after the local name for the plant of “cresta de gallo.”
