A red flowered form of the Mexican tree that is often cultivated as a caudiciform, forming a globose caudex from the size of a cantaloupe to several feet across, when grown in restricted spaces such as rock crevices on cliff faces. The caudiciform type is, however, most often the white flowered form. This form, with beautiful red, shaving-brush type flowers is sought for a handsome tree in south Florida and similarly tropical locations. The swollen trunk is green in larger plants and in its habitat it can go for months dormant and leafless, while photosynthesizing through its bark. A fast growing tree that can reach over 50 feet in height. Deciduous in winter.
