This is one of the jewels of the genus, a lovely caudiciform with brilliant red flowers. The plants may reach 8 feet tall with many branches, but a much smaller size can be expected in pot culture. The stems are covered with conical spines on a brownish-green skin. The 2 inch flowers, borne in clusters, are bright red with a white 'eye' and somewhat ruffled petals. Native to western Madagascar, it is beautiful and easy to grow.
