One of the newer species of Orthophytum (Leme #5947 2005), this one native to granite insulbergs in the vicinity of Barra de Sao Francisco, Espirito Santo, Brazil. Related to and resembling O. foliosum, but much larger and bright coppery red instead of green leaves. A rosette of inch wide, arching, succulent leaves with spiny margins form a 30 inch or larger rosette (under cultivated conditions). The leaves are glabrous above and coated with silver trichomes below. The inflorescence has a tall rachis, white with trichomes and long, leaf-like scape bracts. The flowers are white, borne on clustered or strobilate branches with green bracts.
