Although Guzmania monostachia is found throughout much of Latin America, the variegated form is known only from a few locations deep within Florida's Everglades and is the only Guzmania native to the United States. Now fully protected, during the 60's and 70's many plants were removed from the Fakahatchee Strand where, though rare, the plant still exists in the wild. This form is larger than most of the Latin American forms, but the inflorescence is not as colorful, having bracts that are green, white and pink with faint stripes on the bracts and white flowers. Variable in the type and intensity of variegation and some incredible forms occasionally occur.
