A spiny, upright growing shrub with many branches, each with rows of spines, borne in clusters. The deciduous foliage is somewhat tomentose and is found at the tops of the stems only, the cyathia are red. Native to coastal regions of north-eastern Madagascar in the department of Antsiranana in the Iharana district, after which it is named. The terrain is reportedly granitic rocks and soils.
