An enigmatic species originally described as a Nidularium (E. Pereira & Leme, Bradea 4 (32) but later reassigned to Aechmea in the publication Canistrum: Bromeliads of the Atlantic Forest in 1997. It is considered to be part of the "southern Bahia complex" of Aechmeas which show characteristics of both genera and other special taxonomic irregularities. No doubt this will all be revisited again in the future. This species is native to the Atlantic Forest of Southern Bahia where it grows as an understory plant in tropical forest. the leaves are glabrous, green, somewhat spatulate and the inflorescence is corymbose, nested in the center with flaring blue flowers.
