A lovely Guatemalan plant to about 12 inches across with long, strappy, soft, velvety, greenish-gray leaves. When in bloom it has a capitate head with lots of blue flowers and the upper leaves and bracts blush an overall peach color. Beautiful and easy to grow.
It should be mentioned that this plant has been controversial since its original ‘discovery’ and introduction by Uwe Feldhoff of Guatemala in 1989. Since then, this species has been cultivated around the world and has been circulated with many different names. At the advice of the late Harry Luther who recognized it was “likely a new species,” but was uninterested in taking it on as a project; we called it cf. capitata. It was grown by others and sold under the name capitata ‘Peach,’ which is a name that we keep for a plant that we (and others) collected in Oaxaca, Mexico and that is quite different.
The plant has also been known as ‘Rio Hondo’, which I still contend is a similar plant, and likely a hybrid with this species that is much larger, etc., but this opinion is not shared by the vast majority. In the ‘old days,’ it was also sold out of Guatemala as sphaerocephala which is itself a valid species from Bolivia and Argentina. Confusion reigned until 2015 when Renate Ehlers finally did the necessary scientific treatment of this beautiful plant and described it as a new species; Tillandsia riohondoensis.
A beautiful and dramatic looking species from a variety of habitats in Mexico and Central America into parts of the Caribbean. Coastal habitats are preferred and this plant can often be found growing in mangroves or in very exposed locations in other open wooded habitats. In nature it forms very large clusters and is sometimes inhabited by ants which take advantage of its bulbous base for housing.
A striking plant that forms a turnip shaped and sized base of broad succulent leaves which hang down in curls. the curliness of the leaves depends somewhat on the moisture content, becoming more curly as the plant dries out. The leaves are coated with silvery trichomes and is quite attractive even when not in bloom. The inflorescence is taller by more than double the base of the plant and the scape has long, curly, leaf-like bracts. Pink branches top the spike and produce purplish-blue flowers at anthesis. The color lasts for a long time and in good light, the inflorescence and some of the upper leaves of the plant can blush reddish.
A choice plant that should be in every collection. Easy to grow, mount or hang from a string ‘cradle’, water often and feed well to grow this plant to an impressive size.
This species from Mexico and Central America is an upright growing plant to 12 inches and has a simple or occasionally branched, lanceolate inflorescence of red and yellow. Usually epiphytic, sometimes lithophytic in nature, it is easy to grow and a faithful bloomer with leaves that blush reddish in strong light. Suitable for terrariums.
A tall Tillandsia with needle-like leaves to over 18 inches. Great for using as an accent in mounted arrangements. Will eventually form a large clump. Inflorescence is simple, greenish white to pink to red in color.
A Central American clone. Has stiff leaves in an upright rosette shape. The inflorescence is usually simple but can have up to several branches. The inflorescence can also vary in color, though usually runs yellow to orange though red is not unheard of. Good hardy plants that are easy to grow, great for mounting.
This clone from Honduras has an exceptionally bright red inflorescence. Colonies of hundreds in a single tree, all in bloom, are a sight to see!
A miniature gem! Native from southern Florida, Cuba, Mexico, Central America and into South America down to Ecuador and Brazil. This plant is now commercially cultivated in Guatemala. A short, fat little bulb with fuzzy silver leaves looking like little arms. The inflorescence is large for the size of the plant, and is an inflated spike that sometimes blushes deep pink or can remain silvery. Despite it’s fuzzy coat of large silver trichomes, pruinosa is a forest dweller. Grow shady and moist. A very nice, must-have plant.
