A Brazilian native with wide, thick, leathery leaves in a 15 inch, recurving rosette. An unusual gray-blue color, speckled with tiny red dots and bearing an interesting, branched, yellow inflorescence produced in winter make this an attractive species. In spite of the gray, thick leaves, it is a shade grower in nature, living on granite rock cliff faces inside the mountainous Tijuca forest of Rio de Janeiro. A slow grower, excellent for terrariums when small.

A lovely plant introduced by Bullis some years ago but without breeder or cross information. It may be a cultivar of chlorosticta x ‘Fireball’; but it is not known for sure. A smaller grower to about 12 inches across, with multi-colored leaves that are blotched, banded and speckled with shades of yellow and green over a red background. With maturity the center develops whitish blotches on the leaves and in the center. A choice, colorful plant that is a favorite of hybridizers.

A neat miniature, stoloniferous, clumping species that matures at less than 6 inches tall. Its gracefully curving, slightly speckled leaves form a bulbous base and a 10 inch flower spike with light red, white tipped bracts. Discovered near Parati in Rio de Janeiro state of Brazil and described in 1980, it is a native of low, wet rainforest where it grows as an epiphyte. An easy to grow yet rare collector item. Superior for terrariums.

This stunning large cross of Dyckia platyphylla x ‘Carlsbad‘ has many spiny arching leaves in a rosette to well over 18 inches. One of the most colorful of Dyckia hybrids, it has reddish/brown leaves in full sun or a deep burgundy color in lower light.

A cultivar of Goudaea ospinae v. gruberi, a beautiful Colombian species, with (in our opinion) an unfortunate name choice. A beauty with light green colored leaves that have reduced burgundy colored markings that resemble wet ink that has been smeared. Grows and offsets the same as other ospinae v. gruberi cultivars and has the same inflorescence.

A beautiful undescribed species that has been in cultivation for some years with the name fragrans, unofficial but long accepted. Uniformly bronze colored with stiff, arching leaves in a 20 inch rosette, produces a simple spike of yellow fragrant flowers. A stunningly handsome plant. A prolific and easy plant to grow, thriving in full sun.

Neoregelia ‘Yellow Delicious’.  A beautiful wide leaved cultivar of Red Apple by Elmore. It forms a very wide rosette to about 30in with 4 to 6in wide leaves. The color is light green banded and splotched with bright pink and with pink tips. Excellent for landscape.

A stunning hybrid of 'Rufus' x meyendorffii variegated by Larry Kamiya of Hawaii. Beautifully variegated, with deep red over a mottled red and green leaf. We wish all Neos had such vivid colors! A choice collector item and outstanding landscape plant.

Both parents of this Ray Lemieux cross of Hechtia lanata x myriantha have some interesting characteristics that should express themselves when the plants grow out. The seed parent, H. lanata, has broad, scurfy, twisting and curling leaves in habitat, which is a tropical desert environment on nutrient poor cliffs.

In cultivation, seedlings of this species tend to have straighter foliage, at least here in sea-level Florida. The pollen parent, H. myriantha, is a giant grower, perhaps the largest of all Hechtia species. Anecdotal stories report that this plant can reach the size of a VW Beetle! The intent of this cross was to produce a large growing hybrid with twisted foliage and silvery scurf. Only time will tell if that will happen.

An as yet unnamed cross of Neoregelia ‘Rio Ocher’ x olens ‘Vulcan’ is an apple green plant with a vivid red center flush at anthesis. The inch and a half wide leaves are somewhat thick and leathery and the marginal spines are small. It develops some red cross-banding on the leaves which become more pronounced with strong light or when grown “harder”. Offsets are on short stolons and the plant is good for mounting and for terrarium use.

A small to medium sized Brazilian species with upright growth on short stolons and narrow leaves, green at the tips, getting increasingly reddish towards the base. The base of the leaves are very dark. The inflorescence is oversized, tall and very branchy, bright red with large yellow flowers. A very showy species and easy to cultivate. Suitable for use in terrariums.
