A gray-leaved Tillandsia found growing as a lithophyte on cliffs and rarely on trees in the intermontane valleys of the Western slopes of the Andes in Ecuador and Peru. Features broad leaves tapering to a fine tip, rather soft and forming a loose rosette of recurving leaves. The inflorescence is tall, feather shaped and light pink to slightly orange. The flowers, set distichously, are greenish yellow. Easy to cultivate under typical Tillandsia conditions, mounted or in a very good draining media.
One of Grant Groves finest hybrids. A large, robust plant with especially broad leaves in a 24 inch rosette that blushes a bright red with maturity, regardless of blooming.
* As of July 6: Plants are 1/2 grown, mostly green
Back in the last century, specifically from the 1980s through about 1993, I lived and breathed bromeliads.
I worked at a high class tropical plant shop in Gatlinburg Tennessee, where I was introduced to the diversity of the bromeliaceae.
I met Mr Groves at Bert Fosters' nursery, and I feel we became friends.
Magali is one of heaven knows how many superior Neoregelia hybrids that Grant made. And not just Neos.
I like to think of Magali as a retro looking Neoregelia. Back when I worked at Blooms of Gatlinburg, the basic 4 bromeliads we sold were Ae. fasciata, Vr. splendens, Guz. lingulata, and Ne. carolinae. Or hybrids made from them.
Neoregelia 'Magali' makes a great house plant. Get one for yourself now. Here's Grant in a tree, much like Mulford Foster before him

Thank You - Great As Always
What can I say - everything at Tropiflora is great. The staff is knowledgble and friendly. The bromeliads are gorgeous and maintained with tender loving care. I love working with Tropiflora. They make me lok smart with my customers. Thanks,
Dave

A neat miniature, stoloniferous, clumping species that matures at less than 6 inches tall. Its gracefully curving, slightly speckled leaves form a bulbous base and a 10 inch flower spike with light red, white tipped bracts. Discovered near Parati in Rio de Janeiro state of Brazil and described in 1980, it is a native of low, wet rainforest where it grows as an epiphyte. An easy to grow yet rare collector item. Superior for terrariums.
Just love this species a Vriesea looking like a Tillandsia but better
It's very beautiful and hardy and looks awesome in terrariums

A cultivar of (calyculata x recurvata) is a tough and handsome small grower that keeps a compact shape in varying light conditions. The recurvata parent lends an upright, compact, vase-like shape, and the calyculata parent adds the bright yellow flowering inflorescence. Nice for landscape around boulders.
I know bromeliaceae that I have grown and known way up here in the frozen tundra. Yes, here in East Tennessee USA the land is stretched out horizontally east to west. Formerly from the Atlantic Coast to the great Mississippi River, as Carolina, after Andrew Jackson evicted all the Cherokee Nation.....
Any way I digress.
This is one of my current top ten cold hardy landscaping bromeliads. Originally I got one offset from nurseryman, hybridizer, and all round nice guy Grant Groves maybe 10 years ago.
With out a name tag.
But I know bromeliaceae, and I've been growing them since 1979. This Ae. 'Phoenix' is the same clonotype, or cultivated variety.

A Jim Irvin hybrid named for a longtime active bromeliad enthusiast of the Caloosahatchee Bromeliad Society of Fort Myers, Florida, a cultivar of ‘Icecile’ x ‘Black Mystic,’ has 14+ lanceolate leaves forming a medium-large plant 20″ in diameter with a strong oval form, deep forest green in color with banding the entire length and edge to edge with narrow silver bands set widely apart. The undersides have heavy silver scurf.
An unusual and pretty Brazilian species with a compact, somewhat bulbous base, upright leaves and a lovely red and white spike. This species is stoloniferous and grows well mounted as well as potted. Good in terrariums
A new species that was released for the first time anywhere by Tropiflora. Described in 2011 by Leme & L. Kollmann, it’s large growing plant with four inch wide leaves found in Atlantic Forest habitat in Espiritu Santo and adjacent Bahia states of Brazil. Light green colored leaves that have dark green mottling throughout. In the newer growth the leaves develop white and pink colored patches and the older lower leaves turn a tan color. The leaf edges are heavily armed with large black hooked spines. Truly a rarity and a great addition to ones bromeliad collection.
