A medium to large growing plant with stiff, channeled leaves averaging 30 inches long and two inches wide with stout, black marginal spines. The leaves are medium green with a grayish scurf, heaviest on the undersides. They have a terminal spine and blush blackish-brown in strong light. It forms a funnel-form rosette to 4 feet across and at anthesis can reach over 3 feet tall.
The inflorescence is a branched panicle with a stiff scape of bright orange, orange branches with orange bracts, sometimes dusted with silver trichomes. The ovaries are blue-gray and the petals bright purplish blue. This plant was brought from Brazil in 1996 where it was reportedly collected by Pedro Nahoum and Chester Skotak. Although it keys closest to Portea petropolitana var. noettigii, it is not typical of that plant (per Harry Luther of the MFBIC) and may be a hybrid. It was named as a cultivar in honor of Helga Tarver, an avid amateur taxonomist in Clearwater, Florida.

A giant grower from hybridizer David Fell in Hawaii. This plant is registered as an xVriecantarea but David lists it’s parents as (‘Volcano’s Mist’ x ‘Volcano’s Mist’).‘Volcano’s Mist’ is an Alcantarea. So, we are confused, where does the Vriesea come in? We are keeping the xVrecantarea name though as that is how the plant was registered with the BSI Cultivar Registrar.
It looks like a nice clone of Alcantarea imperialis with a leafy rosette of broad leaves, red with a veneer of silver in older plants. Highly decorative, it is popular with landscapers.
I can’t describe how beautiful it is. It is so big.

A Brazilian native with wide, thick, leathery leaves in a 15 inch, recurving rosette. An unusual gray-blue color, speckled with tiny red dots and bearing an interesting, branched, yellow inflorescence produced in winter make this an attractive species. In spite of the gray, thick leaves, it is a shade grower in nature, living on granite rock cliff faces inside the mountainous Tijuca forest of Rio de Janeiro. A slow grower, excellent for terrariums when small.
Bold white margins contrast with deep green leaves that blush reddish in strong light. At anthesis the center flushes deep red. Widely popular in landscape use in central and southern Florida.
Very pleased with the quality of the plants and how nicely they were packed

A medium size grower from Chester Skotak. This one has wide leaves with green edges and cream variegation. The variegation can be wide giving it a medio-picta look. There is a intense veneer of coral red over the leaves. This is a nice clean looking plant.
All I can say is "WOW!" The color of "Backstabber' is an unbelievably bright red and extremely well grown. This Neo is striking!

Neoregelia Backstabber
The Backstabber is a very versatile bromeliad with its deep red, green, and light variegation. I planted a mass grouping in a wooded area, and WOW did it shine. Visitors to our Peaceful Path always stop and do a double take when they walk past the Backstappers! Not only do the Backstabber perform well in a natural setting, they also are a perfect plant for Christmas planters. Some Christmas greenery, the Backstabber and some Neoregelia Magali all arranged in large urns are the perfect Christmas planters! You can’t go wrong with the colors this time of the year!

A neat miniature, stoloniferous, clumping species that matures at less than 6 inches tall. Its gracefully curving, slightly speckled leaves form a bulbous base and a 10 inch flower spike with light red, white tipped bracts. Discovered near Parati in Rio de Janeiro state of Brazil and described in 1980, it is a native of low, wet rainforest where it grows as an epiphyte. An easy to grow yet rare collector item. Superior for terrariums.
Just love this species a Vriesea looking like a Tillandsia but better
It's very beautiful and hardy and looks awesome in terrariums

A medium size hybrid from Chester Skotak maxing out at 18 inches across. As the plant matures it develops a hot magenta pink veneer. With the leaf edges being a cream color, the veneer becomes more intense. This plant looks like it could be the reverse of Neo. Backstabber.
The deep colors on this bromeliad are amazing. It’s an excellent colorful addition to our landscaping.

Breathtaking
I recently visited Tropiflora Nursery in Sarasota Fl. There were so many beautiful Bromeliads to choose from! One of the ones I purchased was a Neoregelia “High Intensity”. The vivid color caught my eye immediately. It looks gorgeous mounted to my palm tree!
