From northern Peru, the name refers to its habit of producing a profusion of offsets on its inflorescence. Growing on rocks and cacti, this species has many narrow, gray-green leaves forming a graceful upright rosette about 24 inches tall. The inflorescence is very tall with many branches, deep purple going green towards the tips with purple flowers. As it matures it begins to produce a large number of small plantlets. In time the plantlets can be removed and treated as any Tillandsia offset. A real oddity.

Huge plant! Fare thee well, my friends at Tropiflora

Plant is huge and in beautiful shape. I remember my first experience with Tropiflora - was new to bromeliads and in my early 30s. Saw their ad in a gardening magazine classifieds (pre-internet). Called and talked to Linda - asked her to recommend a couple large growing vase type ones. She recommended Aechmea rubens and a Quesnelia. They were beautiful, so I started my collection (obsession) and never looked back. Eventually, a visit to Tropiflora became one of our highlights of our road trips each year from CT to the FL Keyes. Linda was always in the office, eventually Robin stepped in, Brian would always be called in to find what I wanted or identify what hidden gem I found in one of their plant houses. Occasionally I’d see Dennis - when he wasn’t on the trail of some new discoveries in Central or South America, or at a major conference or international show. They’re the best plant people, period! I’m now about to turn 70, and while I’m sorry to see them go, I understand as a senior that we are entrusted to care for others in different ways at different times, and then move on to what life next calls upon us to do. So I wish my good friends at Tropiflora all the best as they enter into a new stage of their lives, and thank them for caring for me so well in all my interactions with them. Their closing will leave a huge hole in the exotic plant world, but also a big hole in the hearts of their customers - but the holes in our hearts will still be filled with great memories. I realize this is a story more than a review - but consider it my Cargo Report story about … what happened on the way to making great plant friends. Thank you all and Fare thee well.
