Of the two most often cultivated forms of duratii, there is little real difference. Both are spectacular epiphytes that can reach very impressive size. Between form duratii and variety saxitilis, the main difference can be seen in the form of the inflorescence. In the 'typical' duratii, the branches of the inflorescence lay close or closer than those of duratii var. saxitilis, which tend to spread and even curve downwards. Both have equally beautiful lavender, white throated flowers that are stunningly fragrant. The leaves curl and grip almost any object within reach, much like the tendrils of a vine. In nature this serves to stabilize this plant which otherwise has no roots. The stem of the plant continues to grow and elongate, with newer leaves gripping ever higher branches, thus allowing the plant to 'climb' to the tops of trees over many seasons. The lower leaves eventually die off, but remain for often years, gripping twigs and branches, creating a durable holdfast. In cultivation you can suspend this species from a string or wire, fasten it to a piece of limb or other substrate, though it will never root to it, and keep it in a breezy, brightly lit area. Water and feed frequently for rapid growth and abundant flowers. A choice jewel of the bromeliad world.
