One truly bizarre aroid from the southern cone countries of South America; Southern Peru and Bolivia to Argentina. Somewhat resembling an Alocasia, it is a self-heading rosette of shiny, deep-green, sagittate leaves on thick petioles that are light green with broken dark lines. The inflorescence is interesting, a spathe with light striping inside and out and a bristly, corn-cob shaped spadix of purple. A tuber forming plant that goes dormant in winter. The tubers are large and can reach almost five pounds, and the plants themselves about 3 feet across. The name means literally 'worm killer' and probably refers to use by indigenous peoples to control intestinal parasites. Don't try this at home!
