A variable species with several recognized forms. This is the ‘typical’ form, as much as one exists. At maturity, a short, fat plant with many branches emanating from the top of a globular silver, mostly spineless caudex. The flowers are showy, light yellow. Young plants have more conical spines and begin early to swell nicely, branch and even flower. The foliage is green with a slightly fuzzy surface.
