The form from northern Panama is most often considered the best form and has been used in numerous Guzmania hybrids. The leaves are green, tapering to a point and form an upright rosette. The inflorescence is half again taller than the leaves and consists of short branches with vivid red bracts and yellow flowers.
This species enjoys pure water and does not thrive in constantly hot conditions though is not a difficult plant to cultivate and does not require special care.
