This Cryptanthus species is named in honor of M. S. De Beucker, a horticulturist who brought this species from Brazil into Europe for cultivation, and was described in 1880.  This very sought after Cryptanthus, known for its green and white mottled leaves, unusual for most bromeliads, is from the lowland coastal Atlantic rainforest found in the states of Bahia and Espírito Santo in Brazil.   The mottled spoon-shaped leaves can be many and reach lengths of 6 to 8-inches with an overall plant diameter of up to 16-inches.  In brighter light, the leaves can acquire a pink hue.  Offsets appear generally only after flowering and are few to many.
