John loved unusual species, and this one really qualifies! Not like anything else in your collection! Formerly known as a Wittrockia, it was reassigned by Elton Leme to Aechmea. The plants are medium sized, to about 20in, stoloniferous, with an open rosette shape. The foliage is fairly stiff, copper-tinted green. The inflorescence is very unusual in being a nidular head, with extra long spines on the tips of the sepals and bracts, giving the inflorescence the appearance of an orange sea urchin! Really unusual, very rare.
