A beautiful and unusual hybrid of (ionantha x harrisii). A graceful upright rosette with arching, velvety-white leaves that taper to a fine point. The rosette is about ten inches across and nine inches tall with many leaves. The leaf texture is rather soft and the leaves are coated with silvery trichomes on both sides. At anthesis the center few whorls of leaves blush pink and an inflorescence of reddish pink emerges but stays lower in the center of the plant. Flowers are tall and tubular, blue with lighter tips.

An outstanding Carole Richtmyer hybrid, one of six cultivars of ‘Rita Padden’ x ‘Red Baron,’ its grex mates being: ‘Cranberry,’ ‘Sweet Pea,’ ‘Tom Padden.’ ‘Wild Cherry,’ and ‘William Richtmyer,’ having 10+ elliptic leaves with lax serration, slightly undulating edges, and longitudinal crenulation of the leaf forming an open round shape 18″ to 24″ in diameter. The leaves are a dark red covered with black blotches and irregular cross barring. The leaves are glossy above and lightly scurfy underneath.

A Carole Richtmyer hybrid, a cultivar of ('Rita Padden' x argyrophyllus) x 'Strawberries Flambe' and grex mate to 'Indian Summer' and 'War Paint,' having about 10 glossy, semi-channeled, laceolate leaves with down-turned tips, in shades of dark red on new growth to purple-black in cooler, darker conditions and maturing to an open round rosette 12" in diameter. The leaf edge has dense serration and medium undulation, a light silvery scurf appears in the lower leaf axils.

***For best results, we recommend growing this particular cultivar in a dirty Turface® mix, equal parts peat based potting mix and Turface® All Sport. Fill the bottom of your pot with a shallow layer of potting mix, this prevents the Turface® mix from running out the bottom of your pot, and the remainder with the dirty Turface® mix.

This Cryptanthus has 8+ long lanceolate leaves forming a large 24" open oval-shaped plant. The "blackboard" black, densely serrated, slightly crisped edged leaves are evenly striped with medium dense scurf bars that reach edge to edge and gradually fade with age. The leaf tips twist slightly upward exposing the medium dense scurf of the underside.

This Carole Richtmyer hybrid is one of two cultivars of Cryptanthus ‘Rita Padden’ x lacerdae ‘Menescal,’ the other being ‘Stephen Hoppin,’ having 18+ linear-lanceolate leaves forming a medium plant to 12″ in diameter with a full round shape. Green-brown in color with the typical scurf pattern of Cryptanthus lacerdae, that is, a central triangle of scurf outlined with a non-scurf margin outlined with scurf to the leaf edge. Offsets are produced on 4″ to 6″ long stolons.
