This is the most colorful form of this species that we have found. At least regarding the inflorescence. A very widespread species found in warm regions from Florida, the Caribbean, Mexico, Central America and down to Brazil and Peru. It can be extremely common and variable to size and color. In Florida the plants are perhaps the largest, leafiest and there is a variegated clone, but the inflorescence is rather dull, only slightly pink and mostly green.
Some of the small forms have few leaves and so are not very nice but this one, from Ecuador, is large, fairly leafy and has a spectacular red and green inflorescence. The leaves are green tinting bronzy, narrow and pointed and the inflorescence is a tall, cylindrical spike. The upper part of the inflorescence has brilliant red bracts and the lower half green bracts stripped with dark brown. White flowers emerge between all the lower bracts creating a vivid display. The only downside is that the inflorescence does not last as long as most Guzmanias, with only a few weeks of good color.
Yamamoto's cross of fendleri x dichlamydea bears strong resemblance to the famous 'Blue Tango' but predates it by 20 years. A stunning large grower with bayonet-shaped leaves that can reach almost 5 feet long, are solid light green with small, hooked marginal spines. The inflorescence is spectacular for color and size. A branched panicle that is 10 inches across where branching starts and tapers in a cone shape, reaching over 36 inches. The sheer weight of the inflorescence causes it to arch, but the stunning orange, white and blue colorations lasts for up to six months. A prolific pupper that forms a clump before blooming. Grow in conditions from full shade to nearly full sun, but avoid full, all day sun.

A spectacular decorative landscape-type species from Brazil. A large upright rosette has wide, fairly rigid green leaves and a very showy inflorescence that is a panicle of reddish-orange branches and bracts and yellow flowers. Long lasting in bloom, it will eventually form bright berry-like fruits. A collector item now, but destined to fame in landscape.
Despite poor USPS delivery, the plant arrived healthy. The offset is large and should do well.

This offset is humongous! May bloom this summer ? Unboxing plants and pups from Tropiflora is better than opening Christmas gifts 'cause you al
ready know you like it and it will fit into the perfect place or just the right pot. Many Thanks for all. Bobbie.

A great plant for beginners! This is a small species to about 12 to 16 inches tall with soft green leaves in an upright rosette. The inflorescence is very showy with a tomentose spike and a cylindrical head of bright yellow flowers and pinkish ovaries. The plant is noted to be quite cold hardy and is suitable for multiple uses from windowsill to landscape.
A spiny, beautifully silver banded, upright vase-shaped plant with dark leaves and a lovely orange bottle-brush-like inflorescence. Blushes reddish in full sun. A true collector item, seldom seen.
Native to Brazil, our plants originated in Serro do Cabral, vic Joaquim Felicio, Minas Gerais where it was found growing as a lithophyte in the ‘campos rupestris’.
A fairly new species from Espirito Santo, Brazil that blurs the distinction between Aechmea and Portea. The kind of plant taxonomists don’t like because it isn’t really a snug fit in either genus.
This handsome plant is a rather large grower with fairly wide, heavily armed leaves and an interesting inflorescence of mostly red branches and bracts, green ovaries and lilac petals. Excellent as a landscape plant.
Our plants of this giant growing species are descendants of a plant that was originally collected in Rio de Janeiro state by Harry Luther of the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens on a trip to Brazil some few years ago. He gave us a small plant as a grass-offset and we grew it to a rather giant specimen, over six feet across, (see photos). It is an incredible species as large as or larger than Alcantarea imperialis, with more leaves, which are narrower, channeled, and form a very symmetrical, spherical rosette. The leaves are coated with a glaucous bloom or waxy powder that is separated by narrow banding on both side of the leaf. When the plant blooms it produces a massive inflorescence to almost ten feet tall with long branches that grow for months, becoming very long (about 4 feet) and pendant. The color is yellow with large yellow flowers and it lasts for over four months in color.
Beautiful plant. Easy to grow in Southern California, as long as you keep it watered and the "tank" full. Tolerates full sun, cold nights and hot days. This green variety is difficult to find. People seem to want the red-leaved Alcantareae but I find the green variety very beautiful. To date I have 15 Alcantareae, red, purple and green. I grow them in large pots on pedestals that are made from concrete "cinder" blocks. This allows air circulation and protects them from my dogs. These plants attract Baja Tree Frogs and a variety of spiders which eat any occasional flush of mosquito larvae. I also see birds, honey bees, snails and lizards on them. Two plants have also brought psilotum with them and of course there is algae in the water. Do not remove the "skirt" of dead leaves. It protects and roots. In hot weather they will emit an odor of rotting organic matter but that elixir only attracts more wildlife. The honey been are mad for the water that drips from the bases of the pots. They are wonderful plants. I have been growing these for years and have one that may flower this year.

As always, the bromeliad was top quality, and a good size for the price. Also important, it was delivered promptly and in good condition.
