This plant is the ‘real thing’ that Ray Coleman and myself picked up in Brazil several years ago from a private collection. A stunning, wide leaved plant with dark concentric banding and a vivid violet center at anthesis.
A Mexican plant with very stiff leaves in an open rosette of 6 to 8 inches. The leaves are yellowish, blushing reddish in strong light or full sun and it produces a shiny red to yellow-green, branched inflorescence with pink flowers. Easy to grow, preferring conditions on the bright and dry side. Can be suspended from a string or mounted on wood, cork, stone or other substrate. Suitable for dry terrarium use.

A rare caulescent species from Sumidero Canyon in Chiapas, Mexico, where it covers the canyon walls in some places, by the thousands. Tillandsia ionantha v. vanhyningiihas short thick leaves on a 3 to 6 inch stem and blushes a peach color when in bloom and forms large cascading clusters. The plant grows with a long stem that forms many adventitious offsets which can be removed and grown or left to form a large cluster. Very easy to grow, bright and airy.
Yes,the velvety texture and pink hues along with its hardiness and ease of maintainence has charmed me fully,and allthough my wife also has pink hues and is fairly hardy, Tillandsia ionantha v.vanhyning never yells at me or tries to throw out my odiferous Lazy Boy comfort lounger, all-in-all for psychological agreeabilty i will take Tillandsia ionantha v. vanhyning over my wife any day...

A beautiful and collectible Tillandsia from Guatemala which forms a large open rosette with wide recurving silver leaves and a handsome yellow inflorescence. Grown mounted or in a basket, the leaves will hang in long curls. Native to seasonally dry forests where they receive abundant sun and good air circulation, in cultivation does well in a hanging basket or a string ‘cradle’, just suspended in a bright, airy place.
A magnificent species now listed as endangered by C.I.T.E.S.

This is a superior clone of the species that has been grown in cultivation from seed! This is a long and arduous process for any Tillandsia and especially such relatively slow species as these. A species supremely adapted to the harsh climate of the nearly rain free canyons of interior southern Ecuador and northern Peru.
The plants, resembling cotton candy, are covered with a heavy coat of silver trichomes giving them an otherworldly appearance. In nature the plants use their trichomes to capture minute amounts of moisture from dew and frequent fogs which provide their major source moisture.
The inflorescence is a spike with a cluster of pink branches and blue flowers. After blooming the plants produce a cluster of offsets at the base of the inflorescence. The plants require bright light, good air movement and little watering in cultivation. Maintain in bright light up to full sun, watering weekly is good but the plants must dry quickly. Do not allow them to remain wet for extended periods.

A hybrid of brachycaulos x ionantha. A 5 inch plant with leaves in an upright rosette, flushing bright red when in bloom. Many purple flowers are borne on a short scape. An excellent, easy to grow plant that was hybridized back in the 1950’s by Mulford Foster, but that also occurs naturally in Mexico.
Also known as ‘Huamelula‘, is among the largest and loveliest of the various ionantha forms. It occurs naturally on rocky cliffs above a deep seaside canyon in Oaxaca, Mexico. This form grows up to six inches across in a spreading rosette, and colors a magnificent overall red when in bloom. Large, lovely and easy to grow!
Our art club thoroughly enjoyed creating living art with the assortment of Tillandsia we purchased. They incorporated them into grapevine wreaths and picture frames.
