This very rare and very unusual Cryptanthus rarely seen in cultivation, other than in botanical collections, is being offered from Tropiflora.
This Cryptanthus species was first discovered and collected by Elton M.C. Leme, Roberto Menescal, and Renato Bello on 15 May 1987 along Brasil 101 Road about 6km from the city of Serra in the County of Serra in Espírito Santo State Brazil. First flowered in cultivation in May-June of 1990. It was collected on a hill of about 200 meters high, situated about 30km from the city of Vitoria and 15km from the Atlantic Ocean, where a somewhat dry shrubby vegetation predominates. It grows terrestrially under the partial protection of shade trees, in very small spreading populations. At first glance its very rigid leather-like spreading leaves makes it different from all the previously known species of Cryptanthus. Although it has a very unusual general appearance, this new species is very closely related to Cryptanthus maritimusand Cryptanthus incrassatus.
Cryptanthus coriaceus whose epithet means 'leather' refers to its leathery and very succulent leaves. The 7 to 10 leaves in a somewhat flat open round rosette, the basal ones a little reduced, are smooth and lustrous above, densely white scurfy and strongly corrugate beneath, and very dense with minute spines. The greenish to wine colored leaves are 10 to 18 inches long and 1 to 1.5 inches wide, very rigid and leathery, succulent towards the base, but without a distinct median portion of succulence, inconspicuously narrowed at the base, and usually not wavy.
Given to its habitat of the Atlantic Coast restingas of tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forest forming on sandy, acidic, and nutrient-poor soils, and are characterized by medium-sized trees and shrubs adapted to the drier and nutrient-poor conditions. We recommend growing this species in a dirty Turface® mix, equal parts peat based potting mix and Turface® All Sport, a calcined clay product. Fill the bottom of your pot with a shallow layer of potting mix, this prevents the Turface® mix from running out the bottom of your pot, and the remainder with the dirty Turface® mix.

Jim Irvin’s cross of zonatus ‘Silver’ x ‘Ocean Mist’ is one of his best in our opinion. Dark brown leaves are almost entirely coated with a fuzzy silver banding to the point of nearly becoming solid silver. The brown shows through as narrow, zig-zag bands. A really pretty plant and a large grower too.
The silver, whitish bands on this Cryptanthus have me enchanted! May be my newest fave!

This Carole Richtmyer hybrid, a cross of sinuosus‘High ‘N Mighty’ x ‘Hawaiian Beauty‘ introduced in 1991, is still a real beauty to add to your Cryptanthus collection. This large growing plant, to 18″ in diameter, has a round open rosette form. The many leaves, 18+, are oblanceolate, 1.75″ wide, and are remarkable for their clear red color, green under mottling, silver bands in good light, and light scurfing underneath.
This is a 2007 cultivar of ‘Durrell’ x ‘San Juan’ by Stephen Hoppin. The shape is a loose rosette up to 10 inches tall and 24 inches across with shiny green leaves that are wavy with serrated edges. The leaves have an olive green color that has a hint of bronze along the edge and slight scurfing on the underside of the leaves.

A Jim Irvin hybrid, a cultivar of‘Kamehameha’ x zonatus 'Silver' and grex mate to 'Alternating Current' and 'Circuit Breaker,' that grows very large in a dramatic, flat, oval rosette of wide leaves, boldly banded with silver over a purplish-brown base. One of the largest growing Cryptanthus, reaching about 30 inches across with leaves 3 inches wide. A stunning beauty that will be a star in your collection.
This Stephen Hoppin hybrid, a cultivar of ‘Stephen Hoppin’ x ‘Richard Lum,’ is a large, flattish, star-like rosette to 24 inch diameter. Slightly scurfed, undulating foliage with tangerine, pink, and green mottled tones, or vibrant pink in stronger light, is marked with two defined longitudinal stripes running the entire length of the leaf and slightly scurfed beneath with some cross banding.
A Carole Richtmyer hybrid, a cultivar of 'Earth Angel' x bromelioides 'Red form,' having 18+ lanceolate leaves maturing to a full round form 12-inches in diameter. The dark and lime green mottled leaves are covered in a very light lineated scurf as the red leaf base clasp the stem. In stronger light, the leaves will take on colors of orange and red, besides the greens. Light well defined lines of trichomes cover the undersides of the leaves.
