Ben Sill’s intergeneric hybrid is a cultivar of Billbergia pyramidalis x Aechmea recurvata and it keeps the best characteristics of both parents. The overall shape of the plant is that of an Ae. recurvata, with fairly stiff, pointed leaves forming a slightly bulbous, vase shape. As typical with Ae. recurvata, the center whorl of leaves shortens before anthesis and frames the inflorescence in a whorl of short, broad, pointed leaves, but there is no leaf blush at anthesis. The inflorescence is a good copy of the Bil. pyramidalis parent, with brilliant red flowers and scurfy red bracts. The upside is that the inflorescence lasts longer than the Billbergia parent. All in all a really interesting, colorful plant.
I really like the mix of the beauty of the billbergia pyramidalis combined with the long lasting bloom of the Aechmea. I grow it in Tennessee where it has to come inside my house during the winter. It produces lots of pups, so is a great value.
A lovely plant introduced by Bullis some years ago but without breeder or cross information. It may be a cultivar of chlorosticta x ‘Fireball’; but it is not known for sure. A smaller grower to about 12 inches across, with multi-colored leaves that are blotched, banded and speckled with shades of yellow and green over a red background. With maturity the center develops whitish blotches on the leaves and in the center. A choice, colorful plant that is a favorite of hybridizers.
A fantastic 2022 hybrid from Jim Pearce is a cross of Pitcairnia (Pepinia) leopoldii x burle-marxii. Grows to 20 inches across and 20 inches tall. The inflorescence is bright red orange that grows out of the center of the plant.
Received quickly. Broms I ordered are good quality, and received in perfect shape.

It’s early days. I soak all plants in distilled water for 24 hours to hydrate them rain water whe ever it’s available. Then I plant in moist media and wait till they get going.

Wilted bromeliad
My Pitciarnia obsession arrive with all the leaves curled in. I gave it a good watering and that didn’t help. I called Tropiflora and the woman told me to plant it in soil vs the orchid bark I planted it in. I did that and no change. See photo. I hope to get a new plant or a refund/ credit.

A tiny jewel of a plant. Small ampoule-like rosettes of greenish leaves, speckled with red, form stoloniferous clusters. Rarely grows over 3 inches tall. The name aptly means ‘Little Pretty’. Great clumper! Good in hanging pots and popular for terrariums.
This Jim Irvin hybrid is one of three cultivars of ‘Kamehameha’ x zonatus ‘Silver,’ its siblings being ‘Alternating Current’ and ‘High Voltage.’ A large growing oval-shaped plant has flat charcoal purple lanceolate leaves with silver crossbands across the leaves that are thin at the tips and wider toward the base bleeding into moderately dense scurf. The undersides of the leaves are dense with silver-white scurf. A striking pattern on a striking plant.
